Unrailed! is a multiplayer co-op couch game in which you have to craft rails to keep your train going. It’s not going to be easy! There are lots of animals, thieves, dead-ends and weather influences trying to get into your way.
The game was fully released in September 2020. I was working on both composition and sound design for the game together with Felix Barbarino
For the soundtrack we had a lot of fun taking the different settings of the biomes into consideration. All of the songs have a cheerful, productive vibe and depending on the biome fulfill some musical stereotypes that we have of desert (western music), snow (christmas chimes) and lava (spooky tunes).
We have done a lot of thinking about how the music in this game could be adaptive. In the end we settled on making the music change smoothly to different arrangements and orchestrations depending on what the actual weather in the game is. Take a look!
In this game there are a lot of things to keep track of: the train can overheat, bandits can steal your items, you can lose your tools, the train can derail. Our task with the sound design was to let the player know what’s happening at all times! In this little clip you can hear the different warning sounds for all of the dangers in action.
